Auel this movie brings to life her engaging book Clan of the Cave Bear. There's a really annoying voiceover that attempts to explain the plot and push the story, because the characters and their actions certainly don't move the story forward.
Other characters may be mentioned once or twice, otherwise there is no mention of them. Daryl Hannah is the Cro-Magnon who seeks shelter among a tribe. There is no character development you don't get a chance to really meet/understant/much less love Ayla, Creb and Iza. The story of one womans struggle for acceptance amidst a barbaric clan. If I did not already know the book and characters, I would be lost. Iza, medicine woman of the 'Clan of the Cave Bear' finds little Ayla from the 'others' clan - tradition would have the clan kill Ayla immediately, but Iza insists on keeping her. But that's about the most it has going for it. When the little one finds a most needed new cave, she's allowed to stay - and thrive. I wasn't expecting much from the film and this is certainly not the worst way to spend an hour and a half. Iza, medicine woman of the 'Clan of the Cave Bear' finds little Ayla from the 'others'' clan - tradition would have the clan kill Ayla immediately, but Iza insists on keeping her.
